UP's affair with B'wood

There's simply no stopping the filmi deluge into UP now.

Anand L Rai, director of " Tanu Weds Manu" will set his next film in Varanasi and Allahabad. Rai, who was recently in Varanasi to do a recce of the city, says his film – a love story – will be based in the city. His logic, "Since the female lead in the film belongs to Varanasi, this is how the city comes in. The character of the film is youthful, has fire and a certain allharpan, that is so characteristic of Varanasi," smiles the director.

In quite a contrast from that other film that professed to showcase Varanasi, "Yamla Pagla Deewana", but was shot elsewhere, Rai says his film will try and capture the city's essence. "Locations for the shooting, which will begin in December as we wish to cash in on the beautiful winters here, will include the ghats and the famous lanes," informs Rai and adds, "However, the idea is not to give a touristy view of the city. Instead, I want to present its essence."

While Rai is extremely reluctant to let us in on who will play the female lead, he divulges, "Since the character has spent some years of her life in Allahabad, we will include the Sangam City in our schedule."

And while we are discussing the increasing number of films being shot here, Rai says, "Weaving tales around towns of North India attracts me. Places like Lucknow, Kanpur, Banaras and Allahabad have a certain innocence that gives these cities an edge over the metros. People here still have an attachment for life which is missing in bigger cities."
Himanshu Sharma, who penned "TWM", is also the scriptwriter of the movie. Himanshu is excited about the project. "This is one of the two scripts that I have been working on post "Tanu Weds Manu".

We plan to shoot the film in Banaras, Ayodhya, Aligarh and neighbouring cities," he says, adding, "This film is more intense than the last one. It's a love story but with a serious edge to it. The cast is yet to be decided and we hope to begin shooting by the end of this year."
