Asif Hussain Samraat and Zoe Viccaji collaborate on “Senraan Ra Baairya”, an evocative and irresistibly endearing number.
The delicate subtlety of the light classical style of thumri lends sweetness to this traditional Rajasthani song. And, allthough it is sung in Marwari, an obscure dialect spoken in parts of the Rajasthan desert, Asif Hussain’s voice and delivery is so exquisitely expressive that the emotional premise is unmistakable.
The ancient melody flows smooth and fluent within the musical surrounds of contemporary accompaniment and Zoe Viccaji’s ambient vocals add an ethereal dimension to the warm acoustic texture of the instrumentation.
Title: Senṛaan Ra Baairya – سینڑاں را بائریا – Listen, O Breeze
Language: Marwari
Rajasthani culture has been lovingly preserved for over five thousand years in their folklore and music and while most Rajasthani songs are sung from the feminine perspective, there are songs for every conceivable occasion. Much of the poetic metaphor draws inspiration from the ever-present physical reality of
the desert – and the Rajasthani vocabulary is smoothly adaptable to elaborating on topics as delicate as the subtlety of love, by drawing analogies to the rare pleasure of a cool breeze and the ultimate joy of precious rain.
سینڑاں را بائریا دھیمو مدھرو ری باج
