When Katrina met a shark

She developed a fear of that particular marine species during the shoot of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Katrina Kaif has a new-found fear. And no, it's not about never having a second chance at love. Reportedly, the actress has developed Selachophobia, fear of sharks. In Zinadagi Na Milegi Dobara, Katrina plays a diving instructor. Initially, she was very enthusiastic to indulge in the sport, until of course her first brush with a shark.

Our source told us, "Katrina had no idea what awaited her in the sea. When she was offered the role of Laila, the sexy diving instructor in Excel Entertainment's Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, she was very excited to start shooting. Closer to the start of filming, Katrina, had a private instructor, who trained her in deep sea diving, at Otters Club, in Bandra.

She was under the impression that 'this is easy' as all she had to do was practice to breath in the deep-end of the pool. But when she landed up for the actual shoot, she was in shock. During the shoot, the weather was acting up. There was a storm at sea. Two hours into sailing, the instructor asked her to jump into the sea.

When she looked up, everyone was frantically gesturing to her. She thought they were making fun of her. She swam around, mesmerized by the aquatic life. After the shoot, the crew confessed to her that when she took her first dip, a shark passed from above her. She was shocked that nobody told her to get out of the water. The thought of the incident alone was enough to mortify her."

When contacted, Katrina said, "When Zoya had told me about my character, I had to practice deep sea diving. So, I went to Otter's Club in Bandra with a coach. In the swimming pool, I ventured into the deep-end. I even sat there and practiced, but nothing prepared me for the big ocean.

We were shooting for three days to get the shot right and I lost about 3kg due to the mental strain and fear. I was really scared. In the shot, I am supposed to hold Hrithik's hand and walk, but if you look closely, I was clutching his hand because I was scared."

Big B is Rajnikanth's friend in need

It was on good friend Amitabh Bachchan's advice, who has been monitoring Rajinikanth's health, that the superstar flew down to Singapore for treatment.

They are competition to each other. Each is as magnanimous as the other and yet they are close friends and acquaintances. Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan go back a long way, to the 1983 hit Andhaa Kaanoon.

The two actors have been thick ever since, from sharing opinions for hours on each others' films to discussing and overseeing illnesses or issues in life. With such a flourishing relationship, when Rajinikanth was hospitalised, it was Big constantly in touch with his wife Latha and his doctors who suggested Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore for Rajini's better treatment of renal failure.

May be it's the unsatisfactory condition of Indian hospitals and also personal experience at the Singapore hospital ( Amar Singh was also admitted to the hospital for kidney transplant) that Bachchan suggested it.

Not only did he recommend the hospital but also personally spoke to the doctors there. A source close to Rajinikanth's family confirms. "Rajiniji has been diagnosed with renal failure leading to kidney complications. Rajiniji's family is indebted to Amitji for recommending the treatment in Singapore."

Big B too confirmed that he recommended Rajini a treatment from a Singapore hospital. "I've been talking to Rajini and his wife Latha on his condition and on his welfare regularly. Latha wanted to take him out and asked me to recommend a destination. Of the many options that came up, I suggested Singapore."

Speaking about his warm relationship with Rajinikanth, Bachchan says, "He's so down-to-earth! How he remains that way with the kind of fan-following, is a mystery. And his wife has been a wonderful support. She has brought up their children so well. We discuss issues with each other.

Himesh to take on SRK this Diwali

With his forthcoming release Damadamm to release alongside RA.One, the singer-turned actor believes this one will get him back in the Bollywood race

Himesh Reshammiya after the much-publicised remake Karzzz, vanished from the Bollywood calendar completely. The reason for this could well be attributed to a fight over his film Kajraare. However, the singer-turned-actor, undaunted, came back with his production house HR Musik. And this Diwali, he is all set to re-launch himself with Damadamm. A comedy caper that he believes will "get me back into the race."

The problem, here, lies in the release date Diwali. That's exactly the day when SRK's ambitious project RA.One is scheduled to hit the screen. However, Himesh seems to be least bothered about the very fact. "There can be no comparison," says Himesh, adding, "Shah Rukh Khan is the Baadshah of Bollywood and RA.One will surely be the best film this year. Damadamm is a sweet comedy and there is always room for watching a feel good entertainer on Diwali. And I'm sure it will do well."

Our source, however believes that releasing a comedy this Diwali, could be one of the best decisions Himesh has taken so far. "While Damadamm will be releasing opposite RA.One, it can be noted that unlike the last five years (Garam Masala, Golmaal, Golmaal Returns, All The Best and Golmaal 3), his will be the only comedy film releasing this Diwali."

He further informs, "The publicity of the film will start in July and continue for three months. The film was earlier made by a corporate house but Himesh has now taken over the film and is planning a grand release for it."

Speaking about the film, Himesh says, "I've been huge Hrishikesh Mukerjee fan and wanted to do a truly entertaining light hearted comedy. After Aap Kaa Suroor, the fate of my other films were not as encouraging but Damadamm is a very well written comedy and I'm sure director Swapna Waghmare Joshi will surprise everyone with this film. In one word if I have to describe Damadamm then I will say that the performances the music and the script reflect sincerity. I think for a feel good entertainer, Diwali is probably the best time for release I could have asked for. The music of Damadamm will be released by my company HR Musik and you will find a completely different Himesh in every song."

Salman Khan in trouble again

The actor may have unwittingly bought land which legally cannot be bought or sold as it belongs to the entire village.

On Thursday, more than 250 villagers gathered at the talathi's office in Panvel, protesting what they say is an illegal sale of their land to a political leader and actor Salman Khan.

The actor, who is embroiled in two other court cases, may be looking at a protracted legal battle again, because according to the rule book, buying or selling of land which belongs to any village is a cognisable offence.

The sleepy Vaje village near Panvel, home to 307 families, is putting up a spirited fight for 83 acres of surplus land they were given by the government to be tilled.

The Panch along with the villagers were joint custodians of this land till it was sold off to Congress leader Harbhans Singh and Salman. Villagers allege they were conned into parting with their land by the Panch, who convinced them that the alternative to selling was allowing the government to confiscate the land.

"The government gave the land to poor farmers for cultivation. Sometime back our Panch told us that government was planning to take the land back and in order to meet the expenses of putting up a fight, we need to sell a part of the land.

Recently we found out that 2.5 acres of the land had been sold to actor Salman Khan without even seeking any clearance from us, which is mandatory. Nobody knows where the money went," said Vishnu Patil, a resident of the village.

The villagers allege that the remaining 81 acres was also sold off unscrupulously. "The Panch gave us the same story and we agreed assuming that it was in our interest. We were conned into signing documents.

It was much later that we found out that the land was being sold to a political bigwig for profit," said Ganesh Patil, another resident, adding, "Though we did get some money from the second sale, we are all against letting outsiders grab it. We want all our land back."

The resolute villagers have filed complaints with Collector of Raigadh district who in turn has ordered an inquiry into the transactions. The inquiry is based on a circular dated January 2009 issued by the Raigadh District Collector, which says this about the vast tracts of lands owned by villages: "Since names of all the villagers cannot be put on the land records only names of Panch are put on them.

However, it has come to our notice that Panch or their kins sell off such land claiming to be theirs. These vast stretches of land are for the benefit for of public at large and not property of handful of people."

It further states, "It has been found that not only such sales have taken place but local Talathis and Circle Officers have given clearances to such sales. In some cases even the names of new owners have been added to land records.

This is a cognisable offence. In future no such sale or purchases should be allowed and would be considered as offences and action would be taken."

The panch however claims to be ignorant of the existence of any such rule. Bhagwan Patil, a member of the Panch, said, "We had no clue this circular. We are uneducated villagers. The officials who registered the names of new owners should have at least warned us. If we are being held responsible for this, so should they."

Patil also maintained that the decision to sell the land was taken in order to meet the expenses incurred during taking care of government formalities. "Every penny from both the sales was accounted for," he added.

The 7/12 land extract bearing Salman Khan's name
The Collector's office confirmed that an inquiry has been ordered. "Land belonging to the entire village cannot be sold or bought. In this case the villagers allege that they were conned by the Panch. Now we are hearing out the villagers, next we will question the Panch and buyers," said Chandrasen Pawar, Nayab Tehsildar of Panvel.

"We will finish the inquiry and recommend for both the deals to be scrapped. There is no doubt that the deals are in violation of the law," said a senior revenue department's official.

When Mumbai Mirror contacted Harbhans Singh, he said, "I had no idea of any such law. The deal was cleared by the then Tehsildar and even our name is on 7/12 extracts. I have paid the entire value of the plot to the village and I should not be blamed."

Several attempts to get in touch with Salman and his father Salim Khan, who manages the actor's property matters, did not yield any results.

Meanwhile both Khan and Singh have started work on their plots. A trip to the village revealed that they were constructing compound walls to demarcate their properties.

Dhoom 3 in 3D Aamir hesitant..

It seems like Aditya Chopra wants to shoot Dhoom 3 in the 3D format. However Aamir Khan, who plays the negative lead in the film, seems to have reservations.

With the advent of the latest 3D technology which has caught the fancy of Hollywood in a big way, almost every third foreign film is being made in 3D. For many film-franchise which came up with their third part, like Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Step Up 3, Transformers Dark of the Moon, etc, the 3D just went in sync with the title. Now one big Bollywood film seems to be taking to the 3D format in its third installment. We are talking about Dhoom 3 .

Buzz is that Aditya Chopra has plans to take his ambitious film Dhoom 3 to another level by shooting it in the 3D format. The action-adventure genre of the film gives a lot of scope for 3D effects in the film. A source informs, "With the success of Haunted 3D , India's first film in the new 3D technology, the Yash Raj banner felt that Indian audiences have opened up to 3D cinema viewing. That made them more confident to experiment with the new format".

However, while Aditya Chopra seems quite upbeat about the idea, Aamir Khan, who plays the negative lead in the film, seems to have his reservations. "The 3D technology needs expertise and perhaps Aamir is not sure whether director Vijay Krishna Acharya (who last directed Tashan and wrote Dhoom 1 & 2 ) would be able to do justice to it", explains the source. Another reason could be the fact that with 3D coming into picture, technology takes precedence over performance. So perhaps Aamir's acting prowess might get camouflaged behind the technique.

Presently Aamir Khan is busy with the promotions of his next production Delhi Belly and once that film releases, he might have discussions with Aditya Chopra regarding shooting Dhoom 3 in 3D. We hope he agrees. D3 in 3D would be a visual delight!

Kuch Hai by Mizraab [Coke Studio, Season 4 Episode 1]
Mizraab was conceived in the late ’90s by Faraz Anwar, with the aim of raising the profile of progressive rock and metal in the Pakistani music scene.

In 1999, Akhtar Qayyum took the songs Mizraab was working on to Sonic Records in attempt to stay in line with production deadlines, Due to its incomplete nature Panchi received little attention and the band broke up.
Faraz then, keeping the name Mizraab,

began a solo project. In the summer of 1999 he went to Lahore to record at Digital Fidelity Studios, where his work was well received. During 2000, Faraz recorded and released An Abstract Point of View on American-based label Gnarly Geezer to much critical acclaim.

In March 2004, the band, fronted by Faraz, released their first official anthology, Mazi Haal Mustaqbil to much criticism and critical acclaim.
To date, Mizraab have released eight music videos, including the popular Panchi, and Kitni Sadiyaan which received airtime on MTV Asia.

KUCH HAI – Mizraab
Title: Kuch Hai – کچھ ہے – There’s Something
Language: Urdu
Poetry: Adnan Ahmed

meri rooh ki gahraaiyon men sargoshiyaan hain
in the depths of my soul are whispers
khwaahishon men, ‘aarizi yih khaamoshiyaan hain
in desires, inadvertent are these silences
saaz hai, raqs taal hai zindagi
harmony, dance and melody is life
raaz yih koi paae ga kabhi
at this secret, will someone ever arrive?
kuch hai jo mila hi naheen ab tak
there’s something which has not yet been unearthed
just-o-ju, aarazu ka silsilah hai ab tak
pursuit and desire is the sequence that still persists
khushiyon ke apne andeshe apne andaaze
about happiness, we each have our doubts, our guesses
chehre ki raushani ko pal men gham gahna de
the radiance of our countenance, woe can in an instant eclipse

SIGHṚA AAWEEN – Sanam Marvi
Title: Sighṛa Aaween – سگھڑا آویں – Come Swiftly
Language: Punjabi, Siraiki
Poetry: Sachal Sarmast (1739-1826) and Sultan Bahu (c.1628-1691)
Sassi roams the blistering desert in desperate search of Sanwal, her beloved Punnun. His beautiful image has taken root in her heart, pervading all her senses. A Quranic verse states, “There remaineth but the Countenance of thy Lord of Might and Glory”. Sassi’s frenzied quest for union is an allegory for the call of the human soul to reunite with the Divine Source. The poet knows that love and the torment of separation is a universal experience; his pain is still acute and particular.

Coke Studio Season 4 – Episode 1 Perview

Coke Studio embarks on its fourth season with a heightened awareness of the invisible depths of the musical foundations upon which it stands. Expanding on the experiences of the previous three seasons, Coke Studio now continues along the path of self-discovery with a fresh perspective on the scale of diversity – of music, poetry, cultures and languages – that exist in Pakistan.

In Season 4 the Coke Studio journey is rich and varied. It takes us deeper into the realm of classical music – introducing promising new talent, highlighting branches of music that have evolved from the classical root and presenting demonstrations of the ancient art form by universally acknowledged maestros. Coke Studio will also be showcasing styles of music that are uncommon yet exceptional and therefore, very precious.

In keeping with the Coke Studio tradition of expanding the boundaries of mainstream listening, there is the inclusion of regional language songs.

Making valuable additions to the country’s known talent pool, Coke Studio also introduces some gifted, yet virtually unknown singers that have earned a place on this platform due to their skill and talent alone. And providing perfect balance to the musical spectrum of this season,

Coke Studio continues to acknowledge the importance of contemporary music via fusion and cross-genre collaboration numbers – featuring pop singers, a diverse range of bands and a house-band that combines the best of eastern and western instrumentation.

Coke Studio Season 4 Episode 1 Lyrics & Translations

TO KIA HUA – Bilal Khan
Title: To Kia Hua – تو کیا ہوا – It Matters Not
Language: Urdu
Poetry: Bilal Khan
shaam wahi par tu naheen
the evening’s the same, but you’re not here
ab yih safar bas aise hi
now this journey, halfheartedly
karna hoga chalna hoga
must be made, must be continued
to kya hua
it matters not
jo tu gai
that you have gone
door mujh se
far, from me
door dil toṛ ke
far, having broken my heart

tu kisi aur ki hui
to someone else you now belong
khush tu rahe dooa meri
your happiness is what I pray for
tere leeye achchha hua
for your sake, things turned out well
to kya hua
it matters not
jo tu gai
that you have gone
door mujh se
far from me
door dil toṛ ke
far, having my broken my heart

haara naheen hoon main
I have not been defeated
kyoon mujh se
why from me
kyoon dil toṛ ke
why, having broken my heart

to kya hua
it matters not
jo tu gai
it matters not
gai gai gai
have gone, have gone, have gone

KUCH HAI – Mizraab
Title: Kuch Hai – کچھ ہے – There’s Something
Language: Urdu
Poetry: Adnan Ahmed

meri rooh ki gahraaiyon men sargoshiyaan hain
in the depths of my soul are whispers
khwaahishon men, ‘aarizi yih khaamoshiyaan hain
in desires, inadvertent are these silences

saaz hai, raqs taal hai zindagi
harmony, dance and melody is life
raaz yih koi paae ga kabhi
at this secret, will someone ever arrive?

kuch hai jo mila hi naheen ab tak
there’s something which has not yet been unearthed
just-o-ju, aarazu ka silsilah hai ab tak
pursuit and desire is the sequence that still persists

khushiyon ke apne andeshe apne andaaze
about happiness, we each have our doubts, our guesses
chehre ki raushani ko pal men gham gahna de
the radiance of our countenance, woe can in an instant eclipse

DAANAH PAH DAANAH – AKHTAR CHANAL ZAHRI

IK AARZU – JAL
Title: Ik Aarzu – اک آرزو – A Wish
Language: Urdu, Punjabi
Poetry: Goher Mumtaz, Bulleh Shah (1680-c.1758) & others

ik aarzu hai meri
I have a wish
ik khaahish hai meri
I have a desire

mere dil ke paas aa jaao
come to my heart
tum sun lo yih an-kahi
hear these unsaid words

bas tum chalo sang mire
just come along with me
zamaanah chale ga sang hi sabhi
all the world will accompany

bheeṛ men bhi tanhaai ruswaai main ne sahi
even in the midst of the crowd, I endured solitude and disgrace
aankhen miri ḍhoonḍen wahi wajh-i zindagi
my eyes seek that same reason for life
wajh-i dil-lagi
reason for warmth

koi sajan naal dil jae laawe
once you give your heart to the lover
muṛ nah aawe raat
you don’t turn back home
ishq tire ch paagal hoyo
for love of you, whoever became crazed
pul gaya apni zaat
forgot his own self

tere ishq nachaaya kar thaiyya thaiyya
love for you has made me dance in tune to the rhythm

dam mast qalandar mast mast
in a trance, like a qalandar (ecstatic ascetic) I whirl and whirl

The poet knows that love and the torment of separation is a universal experience; his pain is still acute and particular.
alaf ala chambe di booṭi murshid man wich laai hu
alif, the first letter of God’s name, is a jasmine flower that the Guide has planted in my heart – He!
nafi asbaat da paani milyo har rage har jaai hu
watered with negation and affirmation (no God, but God) was each vein and each pore – He!
andar booṭi mushk machaai jaan phulaan te aai hu
inside, the plant stirred a musky tumult of fragrance when the flowers of gnosis blossomed – He!
jeewe murshad kaamil baahu jain eh booṭi laai
long live my Consummate Guide, O “Bahu”, who planted this chaste flower

sighṛa aaween saanwal yaar
come swiftly, dark, handsome love!
roandi watadiyyaan zaarozaar
I wander weeping wretchedly
sighṛa aaween saanwal yaar
come swiftly, dark, handsome love!

raat diyaan wich saang sajan de rahn hamesha sard raat
the nights and days of separation from my lover always remain bitterly cold
jo ik waari mar ke jeewe fer unaan ki marna hu
he who, after death, once more lives, what fear has he of death then – He!
duniya uto jis din bhaawen us din parda karna hu
from the world, the day he chooses his mortal frame he can quit – He!

raahaan teḍiyaan roz golaindiyaan
each day, I scour the roads you travelled
man tu aaween kainhn wal yaar
oh, would to God you come back, love!
sighṛa aaween saanwal yaar
come swiftly, dark, handsome love!

at your door, from the day that I did bow my forehead in the True Court – He!
us eenh da sir fida uthaaeen bya darbaar nah leeta hu
from that day, my head (life) is devoted to that Court; no other court have I since sought – He!
sir ewan aakhan naaheen shaad piyaala peeta – hu
they’d give up their heads than give up His Secret, who have drunk from the Cup of Gladness – He!
main qurbaan tinhaan ton baahu jinhaan ishq salaamat keeta hu
I am sacrificed for those ones, O “Bahu”, who have (like Husain) safeguarded Pure Love – He!

dar teḍe te sachchu jehe
at your door, like the lowly “Sachchu”
aashiq lakh hazaar o yaar
(must be) countless ardent lovers, love!
sighṛa aaween saanwal yaar
come swiftly, dark, handsome love!
