Shahid Kapoor scores over Ranbir

Shahid Kapoor scores over RanbirMUMBAI: After making a film on legendary American pilot Amelia Earhart, Mira Nair is planning her next. And this time, her protagonist will be a Pakistani man who lets go of his life of fame in America after a failed love affair and the 9/11 terrorist attacks. And the filmmaker has already chosen the one who will play that protagonist: Shahid Kapoor.

Nair’s film is based on Mohsin Hamid’s second novel, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, which was published in 2007 and was an instant bestseller. The lead role is thus quite a challenging yet prestigious offer for Shahid, who will be acting in an international film for the first time.

Apparently, Mira was keen on casting either Shahid or Ranbir Kapoor for the role of the protagonist, who is a bearded man called Changez in the novel. Our source said, “Between Ranbir and Shahid, Mira felt that Shahid had the intensity that the character required. While immensely appreciative of Ranbir’s talent, Mira thought that Shahid was better suited for this role.”

We wonder if Shahid’s intense double role in Kaminey won him his brownie points.

In Nair’s film as well as the novel by Mohsin, the story unfolds in the form of a dialogue between Changez and an American he meets at a cafe in Lahore. The protagonist gives voice to the various post-9/11 anxieties that emerged in the following months in America.

All in all, the project is an extremely promising one for Shahid. Though the actor remained unavailable for comment, a source confirmed, “Mira has already met Shahid.

The actor loves the script. The necessary formalities are being worked out as both Mira and Shahid are extremely excited about the film and want to start working on it by early next year.”

Shekhar scoping China for Paani

Shekhar scoping China for PaaniMUMBAI: Shekhar Kapoor has been sneaking off to China a bit too frequently these days. And the latest buzz is that he is making these trips for shooting his futuristic epic Paani there.

Shooting in Mumbai is now ruled out since the plot of Shekhar’s film requires the director and his art director to construct a futuristic Mumbai with two sharply demarcated sections: The Upper City (for the elite with abundant water supply) and The Lower City (for the poor). Love and conflict ensue when the boy from the Lower City sneaks into the forbidden Upper City.

Apparently, Shekhar has visited China at least thrice already this year. So, ruling out possibilities of him finalizing locations for Paani in China, is difficult. The first and the last Hindi film to be shot there was Nikhil Advani’s Chandni Chowk To China.

To top it all, Shekhar Kapoor doesn’t discount the fact that Paani may be shot in China. Says the director, “I’d shoot Paani anywhere where I’d get the intellectual and geographical space to build my city of a water-challenged future. At the moment, we’re exploring the modalities and the feasibility of the venue for shooting.

I am definitely starting Paani next year. We’re fully into the pre-production stage. This film needs a lot of preparation. I’ll formally announce the cast only after all the other details are in place.”

Spain had also opened its doors to Shekhar for Paani. But it seems the visionary in the director had already taken a liking to China by then.

Says a source close to the director, “Shekhar has actually found a paradise in China. It’s a vacation sanctuary near the Great Wall of China run by an Indian, who has now become one of Shekhar’s closest friends.”

But here is the real problem? Who will play the female lead. Salman Khan has started pushing Sonakshi Sinha’s name.

The buzz has it that both Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone are in the running for the role. If Kat has expressed her desire to be in the film to Akki, Deepika is the natural choice. The new twist is that Sallu is recommending Sonakshi; the starlet is the new ‘it’ thing in Bollywood and is already there for Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kick due to Sallu’s reference.

Lindsay Lohan bails out of jail: report

Lindsay Lohan bails out of jail: report LOS ANGELES: US starlet Lindsay Lohan has bailed out of jail where she spent only about 15 hours for failing another court-ordered drug test, a celebrity website reported.

The 24-year-old was led from a court in handcuffs Friday morning -- the third time in as many years -- after Judge Elden Fox of the Beverly Hills Superior Court found evidence Lohan was guilty of substance abuse.

Fox denied bail to Lohan after she tested positive for cocaine in a court-ordered test, but was later reversed by a superior who set bail at 300,000 dollars.

Celebrity website TMZ said the actress, once seen as a budding Hollywood star, was released shortly before midnight from the Century Regional Detention Facility in the Lynwood suburb of Los Angeles after posting bail.

The "Mean Girls" star had originally faced up to 30 days in jail.

She is due back in court on October 22 to determine whether she violated her probation from an earlier sentence by testing positive for drugs. Lohan must also wear an ankle bracelet that will monitor her blood alcohol content.

Lohan was sentenced on July 6 to serve 90 days in jail and another 90 days in rehab for violating her probation in a drunk-driving case. But due to jail overcrowding, she served just 13 days, before being freed to the detox facility.

In 2007 she spent just 84 minutes in jail after police arrested her twice for cocaine possession while driving -- in one instance crashing her Mercedes-Benz into a tree.

Last week she admitted having failed a drugs test after TMZ and People Magazine said she had tested positive for cocaine use, triggering judge Fox to summon her back for Friday's court hearing.

A queen of Hollywood nights and a favorite target of the paparazzi, the
former Disney child star was once considered one of the most promising actresses of her generation.

But Lohan's career has dipped many times since 2005 amid legal woes, stops in rehab and cinematic flops.

In 2008 the "Bobby" and "The Parent Trap" star received two Razzie Awards, the satirical prizes presented to Hollywood's worst acting performances.

In a Twitter post admitting the failed drugs test last week, Lohan said she was a "work in progress."

"This was certainly a setback for me but I am taking responsibility for my actions and I'm prepared to face the consequences... Substance abuse is a disease, which unfortunately doesn't go away overnight," she said.

"I am testing every single day and doing what I must do to prevent any mishaps in the future."

Michelle Obama never said life was 'hell': Carla Bruni

Michelle Obama never said life was  WASHINGTON: French First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy said Monday that Michelle Obama had never complained to her that life in the White House was hell, firmly dismissing an account in an unauthorized biography.

"Of course, Michelle Obama never said such a thing," Bruni-Sarkozy told CNN in an interview when asked about the controversial comments attributed to the American first lady in a new biography "Carla and the Ambitious."

"I'm happy to tell you very frankly that this is not an authorized book... I never read the book. I never knew about the book," the wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy added on CNN.

Bruni-Sarkozy said she disassociated herself from the contents of the book, but added she was not planning any legal action as it would give the book too much publicity.

"I do live in France, and France is a free country, where anyone can you know, fantasize and print it," she said. "I'm a democrat. I believe that everyone is allowed to say, write and say what they want."

Co-authors journalist Yves Derai and Michael Darmon last week stood by their account of the alleged exchange between the two first ladies during an intimate White House dinner on March 31.

But Derai said it was probably said in a jokey manner and the Americans were "over-analyzing it."

Julia Roberts honoured at San Sebastian film festival

Julia Roberts honoured at San Sebastian film festival SAN SEBASTIAN: Oscar-winning US actress Julia Roberts was on Monday honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the San Sebastian film festival in Spain.

The 42-year-old received the festival's Donostia Award from Spanish actor Javier Bardem, her co-star in her latest movie "Eat Pray Love", who called her an "extraordinary" and "versatile" actress.

"She touches all genres without any effort. She has the capacity to transmit all types of emotions," he said.

A video shown of highlights from Roberts' career included scenes from her breakout role as a high-class prostitute in "Pretty Woman" 20 years ago and her turn as an environmental crusader in "Erin Brockovich" for which she won the Academy Award in 2001 for Best Actress.

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart," she said. "I watch all that and I just think what a lucky girl, what a very fortunate woman I have been in my life for such a variety of reasons."

"Eat Pray Love," based on Elizabeth Gilbert's best-selling memoir of her globe-trotting quest for meaning after divorce, follows Roberts' character Liz to Italy, India and Indonesia.

It is being screened out of competition at the festival, the oldest and most prestigious event of its kind in the Spanish-speaking world.

"'Eat Pray Love' was truly an experience that changed my life, I worked harder than I worked in a decade, I made friends for a lifetime," said Roberts.

The Donostia Award has been given out each year at the festival since 1986 to "a great film personality in recognition for their work and career."

Past recipients of the award include Gregory Peck, Bette Davis, Susan Sarandon, Meryl Streep, Richard Gere and Woody Allen.

Julia Roberts uneasy with praise for smile

Julia Roberts uneasy with praise for smile SAN SEBASTIAN: Julia Roberts said Monday she is uncomfortable with the praise heaped on her trademark wide smile as she presented her latest film "Eat Pray Love" at the San Sebastian film festival.

"Its strange being appreciated for something that is not a skill, that is something that I don't have any control over," the Oscar-winning US actress told a news conference.

"People say: 'where did it come from?'. And I say, well my parents!'," she added. "Its always a funny little thing to talk about, my smile, because it's just part of me like my ears or my toes or anything".

Roberts, a married mother of three, attended the news conference alongside her Spanish co-star Javier Bardem, who plays her doting love interest in the movie.

"It is in every contract that I have that in films men must satellite and follow me, worship me in an every imaginable, conceivable way," she joked.

"Eat Pray Love," based on Elizabeth Gilbert's best-selling memoir of a globe-trotting quest for meaning after divorce, follows Roberts' character Liz to Italy, India and Indonesia as she searches for life's lessons.

Roberts, 42, who won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2001 for her role as a single-mom-turned-legal-crusader in "Erin Brockovich", was to collect the San Sebastian festival's honorary Donostia Award later Monday.

"Eat Pray Love" is being screened out of competition at the festival, the oldest and most prestigious event of its kind in the Spanish-speaking world.

Japan bars Paris Hilton after drug plea

Japan bars Paris Hilton after drug plea NARITA: Paris Hilton canceled her Asia tour and returned home when she was denied entry at Tokyo's airport Wednesday following a drug violation in the U.S. — running afoul of strict Japanese laws that have tripped up celebrities from Paul McCartney to Diego Maradona.

"I'm going back home, and I look forward to coming back to Japan in the future," a smiling Hilton told reporters before departing on her private jet.

The 29-year-old celebrity socialite had arrived at Narita International Airport, outside the Japanese capital, two days after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor drug charge in Las Vegas. Japan has strict immigration laws that bar entry to those convicted of drug offenses, although exceptions are occasionally granted.

Hilton was to appear Wednesday at a news conference in Tokyo to promote her fashion and fragrance lines. She arrived Tuesday evening, but was stopped at the airport and spent the night at an airport hotel after being questioned by officials.

"I'm really tired," said Hilton, wearing a black baseball cap and a navy sweat suit.

Hilton also abruptly canceled planned appearances in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Jakarta, Indonesia.

Her publicist, Dawn Miller, said Hilton plans to make the trips at a later date.

"Paris is very disappointed and fought hard to keep her business commitments and see her fans, but she is forced to postpone her commitments in Asia," she said in a statement. "Paris understands and respects the rules and laws of the immigration authorities in Japan and fully wishes to cooperate with them."

A Japanese immigration official said she was denied entry Wednesday after a total of about six hours of questioning over the two days.

The country has taken a tough line with famous figures in the past.

Soccer icon Maradona was initially banned from entering the country during the 2002 World Cup finals for past drug offenses, but was eventually given a 30-day visa as a "special delegate."

The Rolling Stones struggled for years to gain entry to Japan and were eventually allowed in despite drug convictions among the group's members. In January 1980, former Beatles member McCartney was arrested for marijuana possession at Narita airport. He was deported without carrying out a planned concert tour by his rock group Wings.

Kazuo Kashihara, an immigration official at Narita International Airport, said if Hilton had applied for an entry permit farther ahead of her arrival, there might have been a chance for Japan's justice minister to consider an exception in her case. "She just showed up the day after (pleading guilty)," he said.

Just before taking off, Hilton tweeted a message to her fans.

"Going home now. So disappointed to miss my fans in Asia. I promise to come back soon. I love you all! Love Paris xoxo."

Ranbir disapproves being compared to Big B

Ranbir disapproves being compared to Big B GURGAON: Ranbir Kapoor has his feet firmly rooted to the ground. Flattering comparisons with icon Amitabh Bachchan are brushed aside by the young star as "very premature".

Ranbir, 27, a Kapoor family scion, doesn't approve of the comparison with the megastar.

The comparison was made by director Siddharth Anand, whose Anjaana Anjaani in which Ranbir co-stars with Priyanka Chopra is due for release on 24th September. Siddharth, who collaborated with the actor earlier in Bachna Ae Haseeno, said that Ranbir has the potential to follow in the footsteps of Amitabh and become the "complete Hindi film hero".

"You cannot follow somebody's career path or match your stardom to anybody else's, especially Mr. Bachchan, because people like them come once in a lifetime," Ranbir told in an interview.

"I have just started. It's been two-and-a-half-years, had six releases and I have miles to go, and all these titles like you are the next superstar doesn't make sense to me. I am too new. It's very premature. I need to first consolidate my position in the industry by doing more movies, work with more directors and improve."

He was here at the Kingdom of Dreams with Priyanka to promote Anjaana Anjaani, an interesting tale of two people who meet each other when they are about to end their lives.

For Ranbir, this is his first film with National Award winning actress Priyanka Chopra. He is full of praise for her down-to-earth approach.

"Apart from being a good actress, Priyanka is also a good human being. She has no airs, no attitudes, she's no diva, she is really basic (girl) and I think this is one of her greatest qualities."

Ranbir takes pride in being a part of the Kapoor khandan but doesn't want to "rest under his family's name" as he is more keen to create an individual identity for himself.

"I feel honoured that I am a part of this family, which has been contributing to Indian cinema for more than 80 years now. There indeed is a responsibility that I have to carry forward. However, I don't want to rest under my family's name. I want to make a name for myself," said Ranbir.

"I want people to know me by my work. I feel that's what is important and that is what my efforts are towards," he added.

The great grandson of legendary Prithviraj Kapoor, grandson of Bollywood's one and only showman Raj Kapoor and son of yesteryears stars Neetu and Rishi Kapoor, Ranbir has established himself as an actor to reckon with - and that in three years.

His debut vehicle Saawariya (2007) didn't create any buzz at the box office, but Ranbir rose above the film's fate and won the Filmfare award for the best male debut.

In his short career, he has pushed the envelope by doing different roles like a lover boy in Ajab Prem Ki Gajab Kahani, a casanova in Bachna Ae Haseeno and a calculative scion of a political family in Raajneeti.

The actor maintains it wasn't a deliberate attempt on his part to play diverse roles, he was lucky enough to get such offers.

"I have always maintained that I have been at the right place at the right time. I have been fortunate enough to work with good directors. I came at a time when scripts for younger actors were being written and I got an opportunity to work with some of the beautiful co-stars. I attribute it to luck," he said.

As far as his love life is concerned, he is single after splitting with actress Deepika Padukone and says he is enjoying his own company.

"Of course. But that doesn't mean I hate being in a relationship. It is amazing being in a relationship. It is amazing being in love, but being single is also great. It has its advantages. You get to spend a lot of time with yourself, you get to do things that you probably can't do when being in a relationship, hang out more with your friends, watch more movies, play video games, do silly boys stuff. So life is good," he said.

Talking in context of his film, Ranbir further added that as far as he is concerned, he has not fallen in love with a stranger till now unlike his character in the film that is slated to release this Friday.

"Till now I've never fallen in love with a stranger. Till now whenever I've fallen for someone, it has always been someone, whom I knew for a period of time. Lets see what happens in future," said the 27-year-old actor.

The romantic comedy that also stars Priyanka Chopra and Zayed Khan is about two strangers who meet on a bridge while they are about to commit suicide and then decide to wait for 20 more days and fulfill their last wishes before dying.

"It is a simple love story where the two characters realise what love and responsibility is and get to know each other and themselves too," said Ranbir.

Talking about the director Ranbir says, "Sidharth loves films and he has a very distinct style of filmmaking. He has a stamp of his own. It's not like he is influenced. He is very hard working. Then he loves food so you will get very good food on the sets, which is also a great thing."
