Jackson death was homicide says LA coroner

LOS ANGELES: Michael Jackson's death was homicide due to incompetent medical care, a forensics expert said Tuesday at pre-trial hearings into manslaughter charges against the singer's personal doctor.

Christopher Rogers, head of forensic medicine for the Los Angeles County coroner's office, said the late pop icon was in generally good health when he died in June 2009.

Jackson's doctor Conrad Murray is accused of administering an overdose of the powerful sedative propofol while trying to help the over-tired singer to sleep in the run-up to a series of concerts in London.

Rogers said the star died of acute intoxication with propofol, which is usually used as an anaesthetic in hospital settings, and should not have been used to help Jackson sleep.

Testifying at the LA Superior Court, he said he would describe Jackson's death as homicide even if, as claimed by Murray, the singer had himself administered an extra dose of propofol while the doctor was out of the room.
