NEW DELHI: For designer Kallol Datta, love for the colour black was a lifelong affair till he decided to come up with a range that includes greys, greens and mauves at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week."This is the first time I have drifted towards non-black hues. That's why I stuck with unusual and lighter shades of various colours," Kolkata-based Datta told reporters here.
The designer showcased a line with 3-D folds dresses, tie-up dresses, multi-flap jackets and mirror-image dresses.
Taking inspiration from the "concentration camp", the line had imprints of cutlery, bar code and jail-strip dresses, saris and trousers.
Simple and free-flowing dresses were incorporated with different construction techniques.
The five-day event kickstarted in the capital Saturday.
Cowl neck tops, tulle dresses, georgette saris, halter neck tunics and pleated kurtas paired with elegant jewellery grabbed everyone's attention at the J.J. Valaya show for the ongoing Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW).
While other designers on the inaugural day of this five-day business-to-business event chose to showcase a fusion line to impress buyers Saturday, Valaya stuck to what he is best at - Indian silhouettes in very contemporary and chic designs.
On one hand there were anarkalis with churidars and saris, and on the other, there were tunics paired with leggings -- all in the subtle hues of grey, peach and mauve with detailed embroidery.
The line was also an extension of his "Alika" jackets based on a fictional courtesan, who has now moved to a new environment to discover new life.
So the last set of the collection saw detailed and embroidered jackets paired with saris, knee-length tunics, tulle gown and asymmetrical tops.
"I don't like doing things over the top hence the line was very different as in summer one would like to wear soothing colours. I had tried to combine layering with fabulous jewellery through this line," Valaya told reporters here Saturday.
