MOSCOW: How do you solve a puzzle like Maria? That problem is now best left to Sasha Vujacic, the Slovenian basketball player whose marriage proposal to the Russian heartthrob was accepted.
Maria Sharapova broke countless hearts yesterday when it was revealed she had said “yes” to the Las Angeles Lakers player.
The couple has been seeing each other for a year now and Vujacic apparently popped the question at a friend’s barbecue held to celebrate the anniversary of their being together.
Sharapova has already been spotted with the rock on her finger.
The beautiful Russian tennis player is one of the most recognisable faces on the planet. A former World No1 she has won three Grand Slams – once each at Wimbledon and the Australian and US Opens.
That, however, pales in significance to her identity as a global glamour icon. She is the vehicle on which numerous fashion brands ride and her photos and videos have been circulated to ubiquitousness.
Sharapova, 23, is the known quantity in this celebrity match-up. The question is: who is Vujacic, apart from being one of the most envied men in the world at present?
Of Serbian descent, the Slovenian is nicknamed the “The Machine” at Lakers, where he plays shooting guard. He was born in Maribor, Slovenia, to a basketball coach father and joined the Lakers in 2004. The family now lives in California.
Vujacic announced the future marriage before a Lakers game, although a date for the ceremony has not been set yet.
Sharapova is going through a slump at present and is ranked a low No.18 in the world.
It remains to be seen how her career pans out post marriage - whether she finds the success that US Open champion Kim Clijsters has found after tying the knot with another NBA player Brian Lynch.
