Stars opt out of MJ tribute show

It was set to be the biggest tribute concert for the 'King of Pop' Michael Jackson. Now, the event is under a dark cloud as artistes who had promised to be part of the show are backing out, with even his family choosing to distance itself.

Called Michael Forever: The Tribute Concert, the show is slated to be held on October 8 in Cardiff, Wales, featuring performances by Beyonce, KISS, Cee-Lo Green, Smokey Robinson, Ne-Yo and Christina Aguilera. However, both Beyonce and KISS have now pulled out of the show. While her reps are giving her recent pregnancy as the reason, insiders reveal that Beyonce is upset that the Jackson family is divided over the show.

The show is being held close on the heels of the September 20 trial of Dr Conrad Murray, who has been charged with manslaughter in MJ's death. This has not just irked fans of the late singer, but his family as well. His brothers Jermaine and Randy recently said, "While we wholeheartedly support the spirit of a tribute that honours our brother, we find it impossible to support an event that is due to take place during the criminal trial surrounding Michael's death."

TOI caught up with singer-actor Atif Aslam for a chat on his debut film and why he does not care about critics ripping his songs apart

You were supposed to come for a concert to Ahmedabad some months back but we heard you had visa problems.

After 26/11 yes, we all face visa problems. I was also busy with my concerts in the US and so the Ahmedabad trip did not happen.

In your earlier interviews, you maintained that you'd never act despite receiving offers. What made you change your mind.
I got a little bored of doing the same thing. I wanted to do something different and be a part of a film that had a strong social message. Plus, I felt that given the current situation in Pakistan, everything,a film like this needed to be made. After Khuda Kay Liye, no films released in Pakistan. I want to act and sing and bring love and peace through my music and movies.

Critics sometimes accuse your music of being off key and that you would not be a great singer without the music directors?

To be very honest, when the music directors ask me to sing a particular song it is not only their song, I have given my version and my melody as well. I have performed all over the world to packed audiences. I don't have to be a trained musician to prove my singing abilities to my critics. I am playing the guitar for the last five years and know how to break into a rock song or a sad song or sing a complete commercial Bollywood song. My songs are regularly played at discs in India. I don't consider myself to be a great musician but my first album was a record hit in Pakistan. And in an industry where there was no future for pop singers, I survived, which is an example in itself.

Is crooning for Bollywood films necessary for Pakistani singers to survive?

I think Bollywood music market is going though a stagnant phase.The music is not as vibrant as it used to be earlier. It has become formula music for film directors. That's the reason why composers are looking for new sounds and voices. That's why Pakistani singers are now singing a lot of Bollywood songs. The era of RD Burman, Kishore Kumar and Mohammed Rafi is over. If you compare their music with the Himesh Reshammiya kind of music, you know what it is all about. Personally if you ask me, the only guy who is doing well today is Pritam (Chakraborty).

What is your take on the licensing of music content on channels as well as other mediums?

Bollywood films are very big now. The reality television shows are a big hit with the masses with their Bollywood songs. Even if these TV shows are scripted people are watching them. So even if we make efforts nothing can be done to make the artists popular. Artists are doing a lot of concerts all over the world now. Even the pop music scene in Pakistan is picking up. It is difficult to categorize my music. I believe in quality of music and I would like to sing songs like Le ja tu mujhe (F.A.L.T.U)... than maybe a Tere liye (Prince) if I were to be given a choice.

Would you consider forming a band again?

Only if it is with new members! I will work on an international project with one of the ex-members of Guns 'n' Roses. I am thankful to all the people I worked with in India who have made me what I am today. The credit definitely goes to all Indians. Hopefully, I'll act in a Bollywood film also.

That songs create initial hype and excitement for a film today is fairly known.

Ad filmmaker and music video director Sumit Dutt who recently shot for the chart-topping Character Dheela and Dhinka Cheeka for Salman Khan's latest flick Ready feels that songs are a crucial part of a film today.

"If songs were not important how do you explain remixes and cult songs of the 80s being shot in films today?"

An applied arts graduate from the New York Film Academy, Sumit started his career directing TV commercials for Indian and international companies, was associated with global television channels and eventually moved on to directing music videos for the likes of Asha Bhosle, Hard Kaur, Daler Mehndi, Gurdas Maan and Bally Sagoo.

Talk veers to how the market for music videos is almost nil and there are no promotional budgets laid aside for videos. Says Sumit, "Consumer behaviour is changing everyday.

 The sales are so low for an individual music video that promoting an album is non-existent. With music being downloaded today, the whole process of promoting music videos is difficult now."

Commenting on the kind of ingredients a filmmaker wants in a hit song, Sumit feels that a song should not have hundreds of artistes dancing around a popular star.

" Salman Khan is perhaps the only star in Bollywood today who can carry off an item song very well. He can make an ordinary number look really fun to dance to. Similarly Dhinka Cheeka was also conceptualized as a common man's track. Today Bollywood songs reach out to a lot of people and create curiosity about the film. That's why they have to shot well."

That's why item songs are all about hip gyrating moves and remixed version of retro songs. "Bollywood films work solely on the principle of commerce. Even if a bhajan works in a movie, trust me, people will churn them out in movie after movie. If something works in B-Town then it has to be copied. It's a chain reaction and we make what the audience likes."

Salman ignores Pritam at Ready music launch

The music of Salman Khan's Ready was recently launched in Mumbai.

Like always, Salman kept the audience entertained with his one-line punches and a little bit of dancing. But interestingly, while the do was about the film's music, we saw music director Pritam feeling a little out of place.

Usually, it's the music director who calls the shots at any music launch. However, at this one, Pritam didn't even get a fair chance to speak about his music. Even Salman, who's introduced music directors like Himesh Reshammiya and Sajid-Wajid to the industry, didn't speak about Pritam when on stage.

At one point during the event, Salman even shook a leg with Character Dheela singer Neeraj Sridhar and gave him a warm hug but he didn't acknowledge Pritam, who was standing right there.

We wonder if Salman and Pritam have had differences during the making of Ready music. It can be recalled that Pritam had chosen a different song for the trailer but on Salman's insistence it was changed to Dhinka Chika.

We tried to contact Pritam but he was unavailable for comment.

Dum Maaro Dum

Pritam Chakraborty is back on track after the not-so-rocking music in the film " Thank You". For " Dum Maaro Dum", the composer has created both fast- and slow-paced numbers that are enjoyable and hummable.

The film album offers seven tracks.

It begins with the title track "Mit jaaye gham", which is a revised and re-arranged version of the cult 1971 song "Dum maaro dum" from the film " Hare Rama Hare Krishna".

This version has been sung by Anushka Manchanda and has been made contemporary with new lyrics, rap and additional beats and sound effects.

The song has a neo-age feel and might be a hit on the dance floor, but it somehow lacks the appeal of the original.

Up next is a song "Te amo", describing a girl and the various facets of her personality.

Crooned by Ash King and Sunidhi Chauhan, the moderately paced track is quite pleasing and hummable and adds a soft touch to the album. It also includes a few English lyrics.

The song has two more versions. One a solo by Sunidhi and the other a reprised version by Mohit Chauhan.

While the solo version is just slightly slower than the original and has a female singer taking the mantle of the song, the reprised version is the most impressive. Even more than the original.

Mohit instills life into the song with his mesmerising vocals and the raw feel of the unplugged song creates an impact.

Then there is "Jiyein kyun", which is the best song of the film. Sung by Papon, the song starts with no music in the background and the full focus is on the vocals.

After a few seconds in the song, light music seeps in, giving way to a stronger orchestration that then follows. It has a very raw, fresh feel to it with colloquial lyrics.

The guitar riffs later in the song draw interest and engage the listener. On the whole, a super composition and great singing by the vocalist.

Finally, there is "Thayn thayn", which has none other than actor Abhishek Bachchan behind the mike with ample support from Earl and Ayush Phukan.

Abhishek is mainly rapping in the track. It starts with a dialogue, but soon acquires the hip-hop feel. It is a situational song.

On the whole, Pritam has proved with this album that he has the capability of churning out interesting tracks. A good job done by the composer.

Ain't Nobody Going to Akons House Tonight 'Unless We F!@#$%^'

Despite the somewhat NSFW lyrics and monotone Euro-disco beat, Akon's new track is quite cool. "Unless We F!@#$%^" features Clinton Sparks and we think it will hit the clubs fairly soon. 

And we can't wait for Akon's India inspired music to hit the stands soon as well! The R&B star, who has been working hard on the soundtrack for Shahrukh Khan's and Kareena Kapoor's upcoming action movie Ra.One, visited Mumbai a few times last year to lay down his beats in the studio. 

SRK was excited to see the singer back in town to work on the movie. "Yes Akon is set to do another song for us. We are just working on it to finalize things. December might be the month. We are excited to have him in our film," King Khan told the Times of India. 

  

After throwing a party for the famous rapper when he first came to town, Shahrukh invited Akon to India again! The B-town superstar invited the rapper to Mannat in October last year to record a new song in order to create more buzz about the movie. Together they held a press conference and even showed off some moves to Akon's hit single "Smack That." 

And Akon was inspired by his trips to India and promised some new material. He told Contactmusic, "I am the kind of artist that creates my music on the basis of my experience. I'm always in Europe, always in Asia, always in India and this is the kind of music that I'm exposed to. You start traveling, you start collaborating with different people and you start experiencing life bigger."

Mehdi Hasan battles illness

Legendary Pakistani Ghazal singer Mehdi Hasan, 84, has been battling infections and undergoing treatment for the same in Karachi.

His son Arif Mehdi said Hasan was not well, as he was hospitalised twice during the last couple of weeks.

"Three days back he was taken to home from Aga Khan Hospital, while last time he was taken to the emergency of Aga Khan Hospital on January 30th, where doctors declared that he was suffering from urine and chest infections," The Nation quoted Arif, as saying.

Mehdi Hassan, who also sang for Lollywood, had to step down from playback singing due to his severe illness in the late 80s. Later, his deteriorating health condition compelled him to depart completely from music.

Arif said that his father was not allowed by his physicians to speak to the media, as he was not in a position to talk freely.

Mehdi Hassan claims to be the 16th generation of hereditary musicians hailing from the Kalawant clan of musicians. He received his musical grooming from his father Ustad Azeem Khan and uncle Ustad Ismail Khan, both of whom were traditional Dhrupad singers.

Mehdi Hassan has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions: the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz granted to him by General Ayub Khan; the Pride of Performance bestowed on him by General Ziaul Haq and the Hilal-i-Imtiaz conferred by General Pervez Musharraf.

Besides the Nigar Film and Graduate Awards from Pakistan, he was presented the Saigal Award in Jalandhar, India, in 1979 and the Gorkha Dakshina Bahu Award in Nepal in 1983

Bollywood's Top 10 songs of 2010

The year 2010 offered a wide range of Bollywood songs. While raunchy numbers like " Munni badnaam hui" kept the adrenaline pumping, soft and romantic numbers such as " Dil toh bachcha hai jee" and "Pee loon" caressed listeners' hearts and the Sufi number "Sajda" spelt bliss for music lovers.

The year cannot be dedicated to any one musician - from Pritam Chakraborty to Vishal-Shekhar; all enjoyed a fair share of the spotlight. But amid singers it was Rahat Fateh Ali Khan who made it big with a couple of hits.

We lists the most popular songs of 2010:

"Dil toh bachcha hai jee": It was a melodious beginning to the year with the romantic number from "Ishqiya". Vishal Bharadwaj directed the music and roped in Rahat Fateh Ali Khan to sing the song that instantly struck a chord with listeners. The sound of the accordion was prominent in the composition and was reminiscent of Raj Kapoor songs.

"Sajda": Composer trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy mesmerised listeners with this song from the film "My Name Is Khan". Once again sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan along with Shankar Mahadevan and Richa Sharma, the Sufi number tugged at one's heartstrings. The sounds of tablas and dholaks were moulded together so beautifully that it helped the song become a chartbuster and stay on top for a long time.

"Aap ka kya hoga (Dhanno)": An interesting remix was packed into the "Housefull" album by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy in the guise of "Aapka kya hoga (Dhanno)". Sung by Mika Singh, Sunidhi Chauhan and Sajid Khan, it revisited Amitabh Bachchan's popular song "Apni to jaise taise" from the 1981 superhit "Lawaaris". The hit number appealed even after a makeover because the composers retained a few original lyrics. It was a winner all the way and made everyone dance to its tunes.

" Bin tere": The song from "I Hate Luv Storys" managed to bring out the hidden romantic side in all of us. Composed by director duo Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravijiani, it surely is a soulful and melodious number. The simple lyrics were beautifully rendered by Shafqat Amanat Ali with ample support from Sunidhi.

"Pee loon": The soft love ballad from the crime thriller "Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai" still occupies air time on most of the radio channels. Pritam Chakroborty's composition and Mohit Chauhan's voice have spelt magic for the song. It also contains traces of Sufi elements that add edge to the song.

"Gal mithi mithi": This track is an amazing folk outing by Tochi Raina and is not like any run-of-the-mill Punjabi number. Composed by Amit Trivedi of "Dev D" fame for "Aisha", the fast number instantly made its mark because of the unpredictable orchestration and the fun element woven together intelligently.

"Munni badnaam hui": One of the most popular item numbers of the year, the fast-paced, catchy song with a rustic flavour created a nationwide sensation. Composed by Lalit Pandit and sung by Mamta Sharma and Aishwarya, "Munni..." from the superhit film "Dabangg" is still ruling the roost.

" Tere mast mast do nain": "Dabangg" gave another hit in "Tere mast...", but this time the composers were brothers Sajid-Wajid. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan crooned the moderately paced romantic track with such expertise that it made people sit up and take notice.

" Zor ka jhatka": Even though the film failed to take off at the box office, this song from "Action Replayy" flew higher and higher on popularity charts. Sung by Daler Mehndi, Richa Sharma and Master Salim, Pritam's composition was appreciated for its quirky lyrics and unusual orchestration.

" Sheila Ki jawaani": As they say the best is always reserved for the last, this song appeared almost at the end of the year and was an instant hit thanks to its urban appeal and a raunchy feel. It's giving competition to "Munni badnaam hui" for the best item number crown.

Brilliantly sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and composed by Vishal-Shekhar, the "Tees Maar Khan" number has foot tapping beats and an impressive composition has made it a favourite among people of all ages. With an urban appeal and a raunchy feel, the song is currently ruling every music chart.

Fariha Pervez Coming Back After 5 Yea

Y.T.H Share 'Mann Chahay'

The rock scene is always growing and now we are being introduced to the Pakistani band Y.T.H. The young artists have just released their second single, "Mann Chahay," and they have the potential to go far.

Lead vocalist Yahya reminds us of Atif Aslam with his soul and power. Perhaps Y.T.H will become the next Jal? "Mann Chahay" is a catchy tune, but keeps all the typical vibes of a Pakistani rock song.

Blending jazz with Bollywood, Botown is back with a second single, "Jhalak." The track was originally on the soundtrack of the film Aksar starring Emran Hashmi. The song, which is produced and performed by Himesh Reshammiya, is already enjoying a spot at the top of the charts.

Botown made their debut with the single "Roop Tera" which got the green light in Arun and P's Arrivals Lounge. The band took their music to their fans as they performed at the Diwali festivities this weekend in London's Trafalgar Square.

Band mate Ajay Srivastava said in a press release, "we couldn't believe it when we heard "Roop Tera" had got to #1 on the BBC Asian Network Download chart. We can't wait to hit our fans with another serving of spicy soul!"

The singles we are hearing will be featured on the band's album The Soul of Bollywood set for release on November 27. The single "Jhalak," however, will be available on iTunes on November 11.

T.I. and Chris Brown 'Get Back Up'

Grammy winning rapper T.I. seems to make all the right moves when it comes to creating music, but not the brightest decisions in his life as he is behind bars again. The latest drop from T.I. is the video for his single "Get Back Up" featuring Chris Brown, another singer who isn't always on his best behavior. The title is quite fitting for the situation T.I. is in at the moment as he was arrested in Hollywood for drug possession along with his wife, Tameka Cottle, aka Tiny.

T.I. is now headed back to jail, but this time for an 11-month period. The sentence may seem severe, but T.I. was still on probation from his last sentencing when he was arrested! In court, T.I. pleaded to the judge for no more jail time and suggested he goes to rehab instead, but the judge clearly was not in favor of this compromise. Police officers could smell marijuana from T.I.'s car. They proceeded to pull T.I. and his wife over. As an investigation ensued, a controlled substance was found in the couple's possession. 

In May last year, T.I. was arrested for illegally purchasing firearms in Atlanta. That trial sent T.I. to prison for 366 days. While in prison T.I. was given the privilege to work on his seventh studio album King Uncaged and shoot scenes for his new film Takers. T.I. also released the single "I'm Back." The track had a very fitting title as it hit the scene when the rapper was released from prison.

Now he has turned himself back into jail, but fans won't be left in a music drought. Along with the video for "Get Back Up,"  T.I.'s album No Mercy hits shelves on December 7. Let us know if you think T.I. will learn from his mistakes and "Get Back Up " or if we will be seeing this bad boy in and out of jail for a long time.

Artists Tweet Love for Gippy Grewal's 'Huthiyar'

Gippy Grewal has released his album Desi Rockstar,  produced by Aman Hayer. To follow-up the album release, Gippy released the video for his single "Huthiyar" which features Roach Killa.
