Starting off the festivities with a retro twist is Akshay Kumar who will share the hot seat with his team from his upcoming Action Replayy. Saw 3D slashes records to be No 1

LOS ANGELES: Saw 3D has topped the Halloween box office on both sides of the Atlantic - and also carved out a world record in the process.

The final instalment in the series - about psychokiller Jigsaw's legacy of bloody terror - took 24.2 million dollars in its opening weekend in US cinemas and £3.3million in ticket sales in Britain, according to studio Lionsgate.

And Saw has become the Guinness World Records' most successful horror franchise, receiving over seven million cinema admissions and selling over two million DVDs in the UK to date.

The latest instalment, the seventh film in the series starring Tobin Bell and Costas Mandylor, has proved to be the most successful ever, earning a 30% higher opening weekend than any other in the franchise's history

"Last year, a lot of people said, 'OK, that's it. Put a fork in it, it's done,'" said David Spitz, head of distribution for Lionsgate. "The following week, we were all disappointed and thought, what can we do to reinvigorate the franchise? So we shot the movie in 3D and said this is the final chapter."

It paid off, though Saw 3D still brought a modest return compared to earlier chapters in the Saw series, whose second, third, fourth and fifth movies all topped 30 million dollars over opening weekend in the US.

Saw 3D also had a soft debut compared to the previous weekend's No 1 movie, Paramount's Paranormal Activity 2, a newer fright franchise that opened with 40.7 million dollars. Paranormal Activity 2 slipped to No 2 this weekend, raising its total to 65.7 million dollars.

Tom Cruise reveals title of next MI film

DUBAI: The latest film in the Mission: Impossible series will be called "Ghost Protocol", Hollywood star Tom Cruise revealed in Dubai on Thursday.

"It's not gonna be MI 2, MI 3, MI 4, but it's gonna be Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol ... that will be the title of this film," Cruise told a news conference in the Gulf city-state.

"One of the things that I always wanted with the franchise was for it to not have a number afterwards, because I haven't made sequels of films, and I never really thought of these films as sequels," Cruise said.

"When you see each one of them, I think it's distinctive of each film-maker" who has worked on the series.

"It's a series that I love doing," the American actor said.

Paramount Pictures said the latest in the series that has grossed two billion dollars worldwide is currently shooting in Dubai, and would also be filmed in Moscow, Prague and Vancouver.

Ghost Protocol will be in theatres in December 2011, Paramount said.

"To be shooting here, it's a city I've always wanted to shoot in," Cruise said of Dubai.

The film's director, Brad Bird, said he was pleased with filming in Dubai.

"We love the fact that it's a big, new city ... It has the scale we look for in these kind of movies, because these are big movies. I think that it's almost like sets that you could never afford," said Bird.

Executive producer Jeffrey Chernov, producer Bryan Burk, actor Jeremy Renner and actress Paula Patton were also at the news conference.

The director, actors and producers were generally mum on how long shooting in the emirate would last, and where it would take place.

But Burk did say that "we will be shooting in the building you are all sitting in right now," referring to Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest tower at 828 metres (2,717 feet), where the news conference was held.

The Dubai government media office said last month that filming in the emirate would last at least three weeks.

The existing three films in the series, released in 1996, 2000 and 2006, were inspired by a Mission: Impossible television series that first aired in the mid-1960s.

The Dubai government has expressed hope that the filming would boost "Dubai's position as a favoured destination for international movie production" and help in establishing it "as a regional movie hub."

Part of the 2005 film "Syriana" was shot in Dubai, while some of the 2007 film "The Kingdom" was shot in neighbouring Abu Dhabi.

Dubai was hard-hit by the global financial crisis, which dried up available financing and brought its quickly growing property sector to a screeching halt, leaving it saddled with estimated debts of more than 100 billion dollars.

There are signs of economic recovery in Dubai but its property sector continues to struggle.

Mariah Carey pregnant with first child

LONDON: Her desire to have a child has been no secret.

But despite her joy at finally being able to share her pregnancy news, Mariah Carey has been surprisingly open about the realities of having a baby.

'Right now I feel nauseous, I'm exhausted,' the singer admitted to husband Nick Cannon on his radio show this morning.

And the 41-year-old says she has stayed 'insulated' from the outside world since breaking the pregnancy news.

'I didn't even look and see who contacted me,' said Mariah.

But Nick, 30, is determined that this Christmas is going to be the best one yet for the happy couple.

He says that this year's festivities will be even 'bigger' than before because the couple has 'lots to celebrate', something his wife agrees with wholeheartedly.

'Yes, we do,' says Mariah. 'We definitely, most certainly do.'

Mariah is busy promoting her new Merry Christmas II You album but says she will soon take a break.

'I guess after New Year's,' she said.

Nick writes on his website: 'My wife and I keep our personal business very private. Being under a microscope 24/7 is not easy, so it is very important to keep certain things between just us.

'Mariah revealed the news about her miscarriage and the long road of healing it took to try and move forward.'

The second part of Mariah's three part interview with access Hollywood is airing tonight at 7.30pm.

The couple have already spoken about the 'dark time' they went through in 2008.

They revealed they were about to fly out to meet family and friends in Colorado when a last-minute doctors appointment found Mariah had suffered a miscarriage.

The actor says his wife managed a brave face in front of friends and family.

Nick says: 'Even though it was emotional for both of us, that's when I really saw the strength in this woman right here. She just handled it so well.

'And then to get on a plane and have to spend Christmas with friends and family, and no one knew. I felt like everybody was kind of speculating.'

Earlier, Mariah ended months of speculation by saying: 'Yes, we are pregnant. This is true.

'It’s been a long journey. It’s been tough because I’ve been trying to hold on to a shred of privacy.'
